About

FiveOuncesOfPain.com is a blog devoted to covering mixed martial arts. Whether it be news or views devoted to the UFC, PRIDE, WEC, IFL, Bodog Fight, EliteXC, K-1, Cage Rage, or the hundreds of smaller promotions that span the globe, FiveOuncesOfPain.com leaves no stone unturned.

The site is owned and operated by Sam Caplan, a veteran sports writer who has covered Major League Baseball, the NFL, and the NBA for a variety of sites such as CBS Sportsline, America Online, SI.com, and Fanball.com.

Sam got his start covering sports when he created a web site dedicated to fantasy football called FFInsider.com (aka the Fantasy Football Insider) in the early-90s. The site would emerge as an industry leader, prompting it to be acquired by Fanball.com in the late-90s.

While still covering the NBA, NFL, and MLB on a freelance basis, Sam now spends much of his time covering MMA.

While he had been a long-time fan of MMA, he had only practiced traditional martial arts up until 2006, when at the urging of several of his friends, he converted to MMA. It became clear to him early in his training that he didn’t possess what it took to fight on a professional level. Despite the sobering realization, Sam still continued to train because of his love of the sport and would later compete in low-level amateur matches in order to increase his technical knowledge.

Over time, his passion and knowledge of MMA both grew and he decided less than a year ago to create FiveOuncesOfPain.com and begin writing about the sport on a semi-regular basis.

In addition to being a special contributor for CBS Sportsline’s MMA and boxing section, Sam also covers MMA for the U.S.-based magazine FIGHT! as well as the UK-based Fighters. He’s also been featured as a radio guest on the Scott Ferrall Show on Sirius Satellite Radio, the Steve Cofield Show on Sporting News Radio, and Fight Network Radio with Mauro Ranallo.

Caplan is also a radio talk show host and can be heard every Saturday on the ESPN Radio affiliate in Philadelphia, ESPN 920, every from 10 a.m. ET to noon.

If you have a question or comment about the site, would like to book Sam for a radio appearance, or have a sponsorship inquiry, you can contact him at: SCaplan8@comcast.net
